Going Green – Celebrating Earth Day

April is the month when we celebrate Earth Day and we are trying to be greener as a family, meaning more environment-conscious, making green choices and just reducing whatever waste we will throw. It is true, whatever we throw away will come back to us so might as well find a better use and recycle an usb barcode scanner for example.

I am happy that there is a city which banns the use of plastic bags in commercial establishments, even disposables. A restaurant was ordered closed and suspended after not heeding the implementation, giving away takeout food in styrofoam plates.

Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

Things to Consider before Getting Fruit Trees, Palm Trees, or Bamboo Plants

When choosing trees to put in your backyard, garden, or any place in your home, you have to consider more than just how the trees would like. In fact, if you’re serious about getting fruit trees, palm trees, or bamboo plants, here are some things that you have to consider.

Purpose of the tree

The first thing you have to think of is why you’re getting trees in the first place. Different trees can provide you with different benefits, so you have to choose what the trees are for. For example, fruit trees are not exactly the ornamental type however, people usually are fond of them because of the fruits that they provide. Palm trees and bamboo plants, on the other hand, are more for ornamental purposes. Palms are resilient but they look beautiful. Bamboos however, look a bit more unruly but their stems can be used for a lot of decors and other accessories.

Place for the tree

Getting trees requires thorough planning especially when it comes to where you’ll be planting them. Fruit trees require more fertile soil and their root systems are usually extensive so they can be destructive when placed too close to your house. Palm trees and bamboo are tough so they can grow even on sandy soil. However, these trees grow tall and require a lot of vertical space.

Caring for the tree

Unlike pets, trees require little attention. The right amount of nutrients, water, and sunlight and your sapling can grow to a full-sized tree in no time. However, unlike pets, trees require pruning, fertilizers and occasional cleanups especially for fruit trees and bamboos. They regularly shed leaves and the amount of leaves you need to clean up can become intimidating if you ignore them for a long time.
